Bronx Man Sentenced to 70 Months for Fentanyl with Intent to Distribute

A Bronx, New York, man has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for his role in a fentanyl distribution ring that led to a high-speed chase in New Jersey.

Miguel Nuñez, 50, of Bronx, New York, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Julien X. Neals in Newark federal court for possessing 40 grams of fentanyl with intent to distribute and resisting and impeding officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon.

According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court, Nuñez and Jesus Higuera-Parra, 28, of Ontario, California, drove from New York City to Elizabeth, New Jersey, on March 24, 2021, to distribute fentanyl. When they arrived to meet the drug purchaser, they were approached by members of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Nuñez, the driver of the vehicle, put his car in reverse and attempted to elude law enforcement personnel, resulting in a collision with a DEA car. This reckless behavior has now landed him in a federal prison cell.

In addition to the prison term, Judge Neals sentenced Nuñez to four years of supervised release.

U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger credited the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration for the investigation leading to Nuñez’s guilty plea. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ray Mateo and Benjamin Levin represented the government in this case.

Higuera-Parra previously pleaded guilty to an information charging him with possessing with intent to distribute fentanyl and is awaiting sentencing. The investigation into fentanyl distribution rings continues to yield results in the Garden State.
