Brooklyn Cop Shooting Leads to OSI Probe

The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has announced an investigation into the tragic death of Michael Lynch, who succumbed to injuries sustained during a confrontation with NYPD officers in Brooklyn on January 8.

Lynch was at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital when he encountered police in response to a report of a weapon. Allegedly wielding a sharpened object, Lynch cut his wrists and refused to drop the item. Despite repeated commands, two officers discharged their Tasers and fired their service weapons, killing him on the spot.

Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is tasked with reviewing incidents where police or peace officers may have caused a death through action or inaction. The law applies regardless of whether an officer is on-duty or off-duty, and whether the deceased was armed or in custody.

The preliminary investigation findings are subject to change as more information becomes available. The OSI’s thorough examination will determine if the incident warrants further legal action against the involved officers.

This case has sparked public concern over police use of force, prompting a closer look by the OSI into the actions taken by the NYPD.

The grim incident serves as yet another reminder of the critical role played by OSI in ensuring accountability within law enforcement agencies.
