BROOKLYN, NY – Denzell Oglesby, 23, of Brooklyn, is facing federal charges after a brutal armed robbery at a convenience store in Brownsville, authorities announced today. Oglesby was arrested while already in state custody and is expected to appear before United States Magistrate Judge Vera M. Scanlon this afternoon at the United States Courthouse in Brooklyn.
According to the criminal complaint, Oglesby and a still-at-large co-conspirator stormed the store, immediately escalating to violence. Oglesby allegedly brandished a firearm at the store clerk, vaulted over the counter, and forced the clerk to the floor. While his accomplice physically assaulted the clerk, Oglesby pilfered cash and other items from the business. The situation turned even more savage as the clerk resisted, with Oglesby repeatedly striking him in the head with the gun before both robbers fled the scene.
“As alleged, the defendant engaged in a violent gun-point robbery and brutally beat the store clerk,” stated United States Attorney Robert L. Capers. “Such wanton violence will not be tolerated. The defendant will now be held to account for his crime.” Capers specifically thanked the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) for their work on the case.
ATF Special Agent in Charge Ashan M. Benedict emphasized the severity of the crime, stating, “Oglesby is alleged to have engaged in a brutal act of violence which undermines the safety and security of the people working and residing in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn.” Benedict highlighted the collaborative effort of the SPARTA Task Force, a joint operation between ATF and NYPD, dedicated to prosecuting the most violent offenders in federal court. “Today’s arrest should serve as a clear warning to those who would engage in an armed robbery that the full force of law enforcement resources may be brought to bear against you.”
NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill echoed the sentiment, calling the crime “as brazen as it was brutal.” He affirmed the city’s zero-tolerance policy for such violence. “I want to thank the detectives, agents, and prosecutors for their thoroughness in ensuring that the defendant is held account for his actions, as alleged in the complaint.”
Oglesby is charged with Hobbs Act robbery. If convicted, he faces a minimum sentence of seven years in federal prison. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew C. Gilman of the Office’s Narcotics and Money Laundering Section. It’s important to remember that the charges are allegations at this point, and Oglesby is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
