HARTFORD, CT – Isaiah Hart, 22, of Brooklyn, N.Y., is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 16 months for supplying the heroin that killed a 26-year-old Greenwich man in December 2015. U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea handed down the sentence today, along with three years of supervised release and a demand for 96 hours of community service once Hart is released.
The case is part of a broader statewide crackdown on narcotics dealers peddling deadly heroin, fentanyl, and opioids. According to court documents, Greenwich Police responded to a call at a local residence on December 8, 2015, finding a man unresponsive. Despite emergency efforts, the man was pronounced dead.
Investigators discovered wax folds – commonly known as “bags” – with a green label stamped “Emerald City” at the scene. Subsequent analysis by the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection’s Division of Scientific Services confirmed the presence of heroin. The Connecticut Chief Medical Examiner’s Office ultimately ruled the death a result of acute heroin toxicity. The victim, it was discovered, had contacted someone known as “Tony” to order heroin, responding to a cryptic ad on Craigslist for “dog food.” He then drove to Brooklyn and purchased two bundles – 20 bags – of the deadly drug from Hart for $185.
Hart was initially arrested on April 14, 2016, and pleaded guilty on February 22, 2017, to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute, heroin. This isn’t Hart’s only legal trouble. He also faces pending drug charges in Brooklyn related to selling heroin, also stamped with the “Emerald City” logo, to an undercover officer on the same day the Greenwich victim overdosed. He’s scheduled to be sentenced June 5 in King’s County Supreme Court and is expected to receive an additional two-year sentence.
The investigation was a joint effort by the DEA’s New Haven Task Force and the Greenwich Police Department, which includes agents and officers from multiple local departments across Connecticut. The New York Police Department also provided significant assistance. Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter S. Jongbloed prosecuted the case. Hart, who had been free on bond, was immediately remanded to custody following today’s sentencing.
This case serves as a grim reminder of the lethal consequences of the opioid crisis and the relentless pursuit of justice for those who profit from human misery. The Grimy Times will continue to follow Hart’s case in Brooklyn and report on the ongoing efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks.
