Brooklyn Knife Attack: Cops Kill Justin Coleman After Precinct Assault

BROOKLYN, NY – A pre-dawn confrontation in Brooklyn left Justin Coleman, 33, dead after a violent clash with New York City Police Department officers on September 7, 2025. The incident, which began with an assault on an officer outside the 73rd Precinct, culminated in a shooting at the intersection of Saratoga Avenue and Park Place. The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has launched a full probe.

According to preliminary reports, Coleman arrived at the rear entrance of the 73rd Precinct around 5:28 a.m. and immediately attacked an officer, slashing them with a knife. The injured officer received treatment and was released from a local hospital. Coleman then fled the scene, triggering a pursuit by additional NYPD officers.

The chase ended at Saratoga Avenue and Park Place, where police say Coleman allegedly advanced towards another officer while still wielding the knife. Two officers responded by discharging their service weapons, striking Coleman. Emergency Medical Services transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A knife was recovered at the scene, officials confirmed.

The Attorney General’s OSI is mandated by New York State Executive Law Section 70-b to investigate any incident where a police or peace officer may have caused a person’s death, regardless of on-duty status, whether the deceased was armed, or if they were in custody. This investigation will determine whether the officers’ actions were justified under the circumstances.

“We are committed to a thorough and impartial investigation into this tragic incident,” a statement from the Attorney General’s office read. “OSI will gather all available evidence, including witness statements, body-worn camera footage, and forensic analysis, to determine the facts and ensure accountability.”

This is a developing story. The Grimy Times will continue to follow the investigation and provide updates as they become available. All information presented here is preliminary and subject to change as the OSI investigation progresses. The identities of the officers involved have not yet been released.
