James Rosano, Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting, New York 2025

CARLE PLACE, NY – James Rosano is dead after a Nassau County Police Department officer opened fire in the early hours of September 3, 2025. The shooting occurred following a 911 call reporting a potential threat at a residence on Rushmore Avenue.

According to officials, NCPD officers responded to the call shortly after midnight. Upon arrival, they encountered Rosano outside the home, allegedly holding a firearm. Police claim they repeatedly ordered Rosano to drop the weapon, but he refused. An officer then discharged their service weapon, striking and fatally wounding him.

Rosano was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead. A firearm was recovered at the scene. The details surrounding the 911 call remain murky, and the nature of the threat reported by the caller has not been disclosed. Neighbors report a quiet street and expressed shock at the overnight violence.

The incident is now under investigation by the New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI), as mandated by New York State Executive Law Section 70-b. This law requires OSI to assess any death potentially caused by the actions of a law enforcement officer, regardless of whether the deceased was armed, in custody, or even if the officer was on-duty.

“OSI assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer…may have caused the death of a person,” the AG’s office stated. If the initial assessment suggests officer involvement in the death, a full investigation is launched. This is a standard procedure, but it does little to soothe the rising tensions between law enforcement and the public.

The Attorney General’s office stressed that these are preliminary facts and are subject to change as the investigation progresses. Grimy Times will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as they become available. The NCPD has not released bodycam footage or further details regarding the encounter. The identity of the officer who fired the fatal shot has also not been released.
