John Garcia, Assaulting an Officer of the U.S. using a Deadly or Dangerous Weapon, New York 2025

BRONX, NY – A Bronx man is facing federal charges after a vicious attack on a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier left the victim hospitalized with deep lacerations. John Garcia, 49, allegedly slashed the carrier with a sharp object on July 16, 2025, in broad daylight.

United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, and Acting Inspector in Charge of the New York Division of the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), Edward Gallashaw, announced Garcia’s arrest today. The defendant was presented before U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert W. Lehrburger this afternoon.

“John Garcia allegedly attacked a uniformed USPS carrier who was delivering the mail,” stated U.S. Attorney Clayton. “Attacks like this are senseless and threaten the good people and systems we rely on every day. They will not be tolerated.” The attack occurred around 12:50 p.m. and left the victim with multiple deep wounds to the head and right ear, requiring immediate hospitalization.

USPIS Acting Inspector in Charge Gallashaw emphasized the seriousness of the assault. “The Postal Inspection Service takes matters involving the safety and well-being of postal service employees as a top priority,” he said. “Let it be clear, we will investigate and identify anyone who commits a criminal act against a USPS letter carrier.” Gallashaw also thanked local law enforcement partners and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for their assistance.

According to the complaint, Garcia ambushed the on-duty mail carrier, inflicting the brutal injuries with a yet-to-be-disclosed sharp object. The motive for the attack remains unclear. Garcia is now charged with one count of assaulting an officer of the U.S. using a deadly or dangerous weapon, a charge that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin Grossinger of the Office’s General Crimes Unit is leading the prosecution. It’s crucial to remember that these are merely allegations at this stage, and Garcia is presumed innocent until proven guilty. The case is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who deliver essential services, even in broad daylight. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case as it develops.
