Diheim Young, a 32-year-old Brooklyn native, was handed a dozen years behind bars for his involvement in sex trafficking and drug trafficking operations spanning Vermont and New York. Sentenced by Judge William K. Sessions III, the court also imposed five years of supervised release following his prison term.
Young’s criminal enterprise involved exploiting women, including four Vermont residents, through sex trafficking from 2012 to 2015. The scheme reached its sinister peak when Young coerced women into prostitution in New York City using false promises and threats, including drug withdrawal as leverage.
In a disturbing revelation, the court documents detail how Young controlled his victims by confiscating their phones and IDs, holding them captive in his Brooklyn apartment for physical and sexual assault. The women’s earnings from forced prostitution were used to further entrench their dependence on him.
According to the prosecution, Young worked with women who not only sold drugs but also transported him to meet drug customers. He exploited their addiction to maintain control, using it as a tool of coercion. The Brooklyn apartment, provided by one of his siblings, was used to photograph victims for Backpage advertisements, fueling the sex trafficking ring.
The investigation was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Southern Vermont Drug Task Force, and the Rutland Police Department, showcasing the effectiveness of interagency cooperation in combating human trafficking. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul Van de Graaf represented the United States, while Assistant Federal Public Defender David McColgin defended Young.
This case stands as a stark reminder of the perils of sex trafficking and drug trafficking networks that prey on vulnerable individuals. The Department of Justice and the State of Vermont are committed to eradicating such criminal activities through relentless enforcement efforts.
