New York’s Isaiah Hart, 21, stood in court yesterday, a cold sweat clinging to his brow as he pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Michael P. Shea for his role in a Greenwich overdose that ended a life. The drug dealer from Brooklyn faces a maximum of 20 years behind bars for conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute, heroin.
According to court documents, the December 8, 2015, afternoon brought a grim scene to a Greenwich residence where an unresponsive man lay dead. Inside, police found bags emblazoned with ‘Emerald City’—a label that would soon become synonymous with tragedy. The Connecticut Department of Emergency Services confirmed the man’s death was due to acute heroin toxicity.
Hart had sold two bundles of the deadly drug to the victim in Brooklyn just days prior. The connection between the dealer and the deceased was made when investigators traced a ‘Tony’ who had advertised ‘dog food’ on Craig’s List—a clever ploy to mask the true nature of the transaction.
Hart’s arrest followed a federal criminal complaint filed in April 2016. In addition to this charge, he faces pending drug charges in Brooklyn for selling bags with the same ‘Emerald City’ stamp to an undercover officer on December 8, 2015.
Judge Shea set May 18, 2017, as sentencing day, when Hart may be locked away for two decades. For now, he awaits his fate on bond.
The DEA’s New Haven Task Force and the Greenwich Police Department are credited with breaking this case wide open. They were joined by task force officers from several local departments and the New York Police Department—a collaboration that proved to be a formidable force against drug trafficking.
This grim tale is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Peter S. Jongbloed, with assistance from Law Student Intern William Kukin.
