BROOKLYN – A pre-dawn 911 call turned fatal on Thomas S. Boyland Street in Brooklyn on November 17, 2025, leaving DaShawn Larode dead after a confrontation with New York City Police Department officers. The incident is now under investigation by New York Attorney General Letitia James’ Office of Special Investigation (OSI), the agency tasked with probing deaths involving law enforcement.
According to preliminary reports, NYPD officers responded to a call reporting an injured person at an apartment building. Upon entering the building, officers say DaShawn Larode opened an apartment door and immediately fired a shotgun, grazing one officer in the face. That officer then returned fire, striking and killing Larode at the scene.
The injured officer was transported to a local hospital and has since been released. Details surrounding the initial 911 call – the nature of the reported injury and who made the call – remain scarce. The Grimy Times is working to uncover details the NYPD is not releasing.
The Attorney General’s OSI is obligated, under New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, to assess every reported incident where a police or peace officer may have caused a death, regardless of circumstance. This includes on-duty or off-duty incidents, armed or unarmed individuals, and those in or out of custody. If the initial assessment indicates potential wrongdoing, OSI launches a full investigation, as it has in this case.
“OSI’s mandate is clear: to conduct thorough, independent investigations into these tragic incidents,” a statement from the AG’s office reads. “We will gather all available evidence and pursue the facts wherever they lead.” This investigation is ongoing, and the facts presented are preliminary and subject to change.
The shooting is sure to reignite debate over police use of force in New York City. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as they become available. We will be digging for answers, and demanding transparency in a case where a life was taken and questions remain unanswered.
