In a shocking turn of events, a shooting erupted in St. Catherine Street, Montreal, on June 8, 1890, leaving Eugene Cowles, son of the late Edmund Cowles, a well-known editor from Cleveland, Ohio, fighting for his life at the General Hospital with a bullet wound in his neck. The 40-year-old Cowles, who had been struggling with his health, had been living apart from his wife, daughter of a wealthy Cleveland banker, Mr. Hale. Cowles had been in business in Lockport, New York, and had made a visit to Cleveland to see his mother and friends before taking his 10-year-old daughter, Florence, with him, unbeknownst to her mother.
