In a swift and decisive move, Judge T.M. Kennerly cleared his docket to focus on federal cases, dishing out sentences to 61 defendants in the Brownsville federal district court. The most notable case involved George Von Stein, a Brownsville resident who pleaded guilty to customs liquor charges. On Tuesday afternoon, Von Stein was sentenced to 18 months in Leavenworth Penitentiary for possessing 24 bottles of Mexican liquor near the Tomates Bend below Brownsville. Von Stein was arrested alongside Ray Speedy Adams on Sunday, and their speedy indictment and sentencing set a record for the present term of court.
