Bryant Bermudez, Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property, Connecticut 2023

EAST HARTFORD, CT – Bryant Bermudez, 31, of East Hartford, has confessed to his central role in a lucrative catalytic converter theft ring that stretched across state lines. Bermudez pleaded guilty yesterday before U.S. District Judge Sarala V. Nagala, admitting to conspiracy and multiple counts of trafficking stolen vehicle parts.

The operation, investigated by the ATF, IRS-CI, and East Hartford PD, exploited the high value of precious metals found within catalytic converters. These components, easily stolen from under vehicles, fetch between $300 and $1,500 each on the scrap market, making them a prime target for thieves. The ring wasn’t just petty theft; it was a coordinated effort to profit from a growing national problem.

Court documents reveal Bermudez began working at Downpipe Depot & Recycling LLC in November 2021. The East Hartford warehouse served as the hub for receiving stolen converters, allegedly sourced from a network of thieves. Bermudez, alongside a co-conspirator, purchased these illegal goods – often under the cover of darkness – then transported them to recycling businesses in New York and New Jersey. These weren’t small runs; authorities say van loads of stolen parts were making the trip on a bi-weekly basis.

The scale of the operation is staggering. Investigators say some trips to New York and New Jersey yielded payments exceeding $200,000. Bermudez and his accomplice essentially ran a pipeline for stolen automotive parts, turning a blind eye to the source and profiting handsomely from the crime. The operation highlights the growing sophistication of auto theft rings and the challenges facing law enforcement in tracking these stolen components.

Bermudez now faces a significant prison sentence. He pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property, carrying a maximum five-year term. Additionally, he admitted to three counts of interstate transportation of stolen property, each carrying a maximum sentence of ten years. Judge Nagala has scheduled sentencing for July 12th, and Bermudez remains free on a $150,000 bond until then.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lauren C. Clark and A. Reed Durham are prosecuting the case. While Bermudez has pleaded guilty, the investigation is ongoing, and authorities haven’t ruled out further charges or arrests related to the theft ring and those supplying the stolen converters to Downpipe Depot. The ATF Boston Field Division led the investigation.
