BUFFALO, NY – Robert Lowe, 35, of Buffalo, turned the FBI’s Mohawk Street office into a demolition derby late Thursday night, allegedly slamming his SUV into the facility’s security gates not once, but twice. The attack, leaving over $50,000 in damage, culminated in a high-speed chase around the perimeter before Lowe was finally apprehended by Buffalo Police.
According to a criminal complaint unsealed today, Lowe first rammed the gate on Mohawk Street around 10:40 p.m. on March 30, 2017. Rather than stopping, he backed up and then began circling the FBI building at a “high rate of speed.” He then targeted a second gate on Staats Street, crashing into it twice, ultimately breaching the perimeter and entering the parking lot.
The rampage didn’t end there. Lowe reportedly drove in circles within the parking lot before ramming another outbound lane gate. He then fled the scene, eventually being boxed in and taken into custody by Buffalo Police on Chippewa Street and Elmwood Avenue. The full extent of Lowe’s motivation remains unclear.
Acting U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr. announced the charges today, stating that Lowe is facing a charge of depredation of government property. If convicted, Lowe could face a maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a $1,000 fine. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul C. Parisi is leading the prosecution.
The investigation was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, led by Special Agent-in-Charge Adam S. Cohen, and the Buffalo Police Department, under the direction of Commissioner Daniel Derenda. Sources close to the investigation tell Grimy Times that authorities are currently exploring all possible motives, but have yet to publicly comment on a potential connection to any larger threat.
