BUFFALO, NY – Brandon Jonas, a 39-year-old Buffalo man, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the murder of two brothers, Nelson and Miguel Camacho.
According to a statement from U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross, Jonas was convicted of discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara handed down the 240-month sentence.
The crime took place on November 11, 2004, when Jonas and his co-defendants, Efrain Hidalgo and Misael Montalvo, attempted to rob the brothers inside a residence on Niagara Street on Buffalo’s West Side. Jonas, armed with an AK-47 style rifle, and Hidalgo, wielding a baseball bat, forced their way into the residence in an attempt to steal money and drugs.
During the robbery attempt, Jonas shot and killed the Camachos. In a shocking twist, it was revealed that Josue Ortiz, who initially served 10 years in state prison for the murders, had his conviction vacated in 2015 based on the findings of a federal investigation.
The investigation that led to Jonas’ sentencing was a collaborative effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation Safe Streets Task Force, the New York State Police, the Buffalo Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph M. Tripi, who handled the case, issued a statement highlighting the gravity of the crime. “Brandon Jonas’ actions that night were nothing short of brutal, and it’s a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement that he’s finally facing justice for his crimes.”
