Bullhead Man Fails to Register, Faces Consequences

South Dakota resident Steven Whiteman, Jr. has seen the harsh side of the law after failing to register as a sex offender. Whiteman, 44, was sentenced on April 27, 2015, to 16 months in custody for violating the federal requirement.

According to the court documents, Whiteman was previously convicted of a sex offense in federal court, which mandates him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. However, between May 9, 2014, and May 25, 2014, Whiteman failed to fulfill this obligation, leading to the charges brought against him.

Whiteman was indicted by a federal grand jury on July 15, 2014. He later pled guilty on November 19, 2014, to Failure to Register as a Sex Offender. This conviction stems from his failure to register during the specified time period.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service. The court has imposed a harsh sentence, hoping to serve as a deterrent for others who may be tempted to follow in Whiteman’s footsteps.
