Burton Cummings, 43, pleaded guilty to tax evasion in federal court

BURTON CUMMINGS, a 43-year-old former business owner from Branson, Mo., has pleaded guilty to tax evasion, a federal crime that has left the US government with a staggering bill of over $1.6 million.

According to court documents, Cummings knowingly failed to pay more than $825,297.81 in taxes between 2013 and 2024, despite earning a significant income from his business ventures. With interest and penalties, the total amount owed to the US government has ballooned to $1,604,729.02.

Cummings’ guilty plea was entered before US Chief Magistrate Judge Willie Epps, Jr. in federal court. The former business owner admitted to making false statements to IRS Revenue Officers, claiming he had no income, when in fact he had been taking significant cash withdrawals from his companies.

Under federal statutes, Cummings is subject to a sentence of up to five years in federal prison without parole. The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes, as the sentencing of the defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory sentencing guidelines and other statutory factors.
