The case, which was filed in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland on April 17, 2014, alleges that Byrd used a firearm to rob a convenience store in Baltimore, Maryland.
According to court documents, Byrd, 32, was arrested on April 15, 2014, after a witness identified him as the perpetrator of the crime.
Byrd was subsequently charged with one count of armed robbery, a felony offense that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
If convicted, Byrd faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, followed by a maximum sentence of 20 years.
Byrd is currently being held at the Baltimore City Detention Center pending a trial, which is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2015.
The case is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily M. Sullivan serving as lead counsel.
Byrd’s defense team, led by attorney James P. Sullivan, has vowed to vigorously defend their client against the charges, arguing that the evidence against Byrd is circumstantial and that he was not present at the scene of the crime.
The case has sparked a heated debate in the community about the need for tougher sentencing laws and increased funding for law enforcement to combat violent crime.
