BANGOR, Maine — A sinister turn in the fight against pedophilia: Samuel Staples, a 27-year-old resident of Calais, was today sentenced to five years in federal prison for distributing child sexual abuse material.
U.S. District Judge Lance E. Walker imposed the sentence on Staples, who pleaded guilty on August 31, 2022. A search warrant executed at Staples’ residence unearthed multiple images and videos of child pornography stored on his cell phone, following an exchange of explicit content with a social networking group’s administrator.
According to court records, in September 2021, Staples initiated a chat session with the administrator and sent a sexually explicit image of a prepubescent female child. The Calais Police Department, along with Homeland Security Investigations and Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit, responded swiftly to this despicable act.
Project Safe Childhood, the nationwide initiative combating the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, played a pivotal role in Staples’ prosecution. For those aware of similar heinous acts or in possession of such material, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is urging action through their website https://report.cybertip.org/ or by calling 1-800-843-5678. Emergency situations should be reported immediately to local law enforcement.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the relentless pursuit of justice for child victims and the consequences faced by predators who exploit children over the internet. For more information on Project Safe Childhood, visit www.justice.gov/psc.
