Calif. Man Sentenced to Over 7 Years for Drug Mailing Scheme

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: In a chilling operation spanning state lines, Tyler Vuong Le, 28, from Anaheim, California, has been handed down a federal prison sentence of more than seven years for mailing dangerous drugs to Iowa.

The sentencing, which took place on June 11, 2024, followed a guilty plea by Le on January 3, 2024, to the distribution of a controlled substance. The defendant admitted to sending packages laden with fentanyl, LSD, and other illegal substances under the guise of oxycodone pills.

Law enforcement intercepted these parcels, thanks to an individual working with authorities in Iowa. Over 5,900 counterfeit oxycodone pills were among the contraband seized, averting a potential catastrophe.

Fentanyl, one of the substances Le mailed, is a potent synthetic opioid that the DEA classifies as 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin. The threat posed by such substances cannot be overstated.

Le was sentenced to 87 months’ imprisonment in Cedar Rapids by Judge Leonard T. Strand, with an additional four years of supervised release following his prison term. There is no parole in the federal system.

The investigation and prosecution were a joint effort of the United States Postal Inspectors, DEA, and local law enforcement agencies including the Waterloo Police Department, FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office, and Cedar Falls Police Department. The case file number is 23-cr-2042.
