California Man Caught with Unregistered Firearm

A Fontana, California man was sentenced to 24 months in custody for possession of an unregistered firearm in South Dakota. On December 16, 2014, Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, handed down the sentence to 26-year-old Gregorio Aguirre.

Aguirre was convicted of possessing a sawed-off Remington .22 caliber rifle, which he had knowingly been in possession of when he was pulled over by the South Dakota Highway Patrol on April 12, 2014.

The charge against Aguirre was part of a larger investigation by the Unified Narcotics Enforcement Team, the South Dakota Highway Patrol, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric Kelderman prosecuted the case.

Aguirre pleaded guilty to the charge on August 22, 2014, and as part of his sentence, he was ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

He was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, marking the end of the case. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of gun safety and the consequences of possessing unregistered firearms.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentencing, highlighting the significance of the case and the efforts of the law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation.

The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of unregulated firearms and the importance of strict gun control measures in preventing such incidents.
