Dallas County man Calvin Lee Browning, 33, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to 42 months for the armed burglary of an Austin Bank branch in Jacksonville, Texas. The heist, carried out in the early hours of Feb. 9, 2016, involved disabling security systems and looting over $30,000 from ATM cash drawers in a brazen break-in that triggered a high-speed chase and a chaotic foot pursuit.
Browning pleaded guilty on Aug. 23, 2016, to one count of bank burglary, a federal offense. U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Catharina Haynes handed down the sentence, which also includes a restitution order of $58,376.75. The amount covers not only the stolen cash but also damages from the forced entry and sabotage of surveillance systems.
According to court records, Browning and three accomplices targeted the Jacksonville branch before opening time. Three were dropped at the bank’s entrance while the fourth waited in a getaway vehicle nearby. Using tools to bypass locks and disable alarms, the crew cut the bank’s cameras and breached the ATM vaults, making off with the cash in minutes.
As the suspects fled in the getaway car, a Jacksonville Police Department patrol unit attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle sped off, leading to a high-speed pursuit through city streets. Mid-chase, all four men bailed from the moving car and scattered on foot. One was captured at the scene; the rest, including Browning, were apprehended in the following days.
The FBI and Jacksonville Police Department jointly investigated the case, which exposed a coordinated effort to exploit vulnerabilities in the bank’s physical security. Evidence collected at the scene, including tools and video fragments, helped identify Browning and his associates. Assistant U.S. Attorney Frank Coan prosecuted the case, emphasizing the threat such crimes pose to public safety and financial institutions.
Acting U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston confirmed the sentencing, stating that violent and premeditated crimes against financial institutions will be met with full federal prosecution. Browning’s conviction adds to a growing list of federal cases targeting organized burglary rings operating across East Texas.
