Camden Man Admits Meth Trafficking Scheme

Camden County’s underground drug networks took another hit as 46-year-old Mauricio Melendrez of Blackwood, New Jersey, admitted to attempting to distribute nearly two pounds of crystal methamphetamine in a brazen smuggling scheme that unraveled before delivery.

Melendrez pleaded guilty in Camden federal court to one count of attempt to distribute and possess with intent to distribute five grams or more of crystal methamphetamine. The plea, entered before U.S. District Judge Jerome B. Simandle, stems from a 2014 plot that masked a massive drug shipment inside a household appliance.

According to court documents, in May 2014, Melendrez orchestrated the shipment of a package containing approximately two pounds of crystal methamphetamine, concealed inside a 4-slice toaster oven. The package never reached its destination—authorities seized it on June 3, 2014, before delivery. Evidence later revealed Melendrez admitted the drugs were sent by a cartel and that he still owed them money for the shipment.

The Drug Enforcement Administration led the investigation, with special agents under the direction of Susan A. Gibson in Newark uncovering the trafficking attempt. U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced the guilty plea, crediting the DEA’s relentless work in intercepting the deadly payload before it flooded local streets.

Melendrez now faces a mandatory minimum of five years in prison, up to 40 years behind bars, and a fine of up to $5 million, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense. The sentencing is scheduled for August 1, 2019, in federal court.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sara A. Aliabadi of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Camden. As federal authorities continue to crack down on drug networks, Melendrez’s admission serves as a stark reminder of the high stakes in America’s ongoing opioid and meth crisis.
