Cameron James Kennedy, a 26-year-old Las Vegas resident, is accused of carrying out an armed robbery at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino in January 2018. The brazen heist took place on January 10, 2018, when Kennedy allegedly demanded money from a cashier in the casino’s floor cage.
According to the allegations, Kennedy was on federal supervision for a bank robbery charge and was required to wear a GPS monitoring bracelet. However, he cut off the device three hours before the robbery and went on to display a black semiautomatic handgun in his waistband, telling the cashier, "I want all your hundreds and don’t mess around. I am not kidding, I want all the hundreds."
Kennedy allegedly stole approximately $23,367 and fled the scene in a taxi cab. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The case is being investigated by the FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tony Lopez is prosecuting the case.
A complaint is merely an allegation, and Kennedy is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
The New York-New York Hotel and Casino was left shaken by the incident, which highlights the ongoing threat of armed robbery in the city’s casinos.
Kennedy’s alleged actions are a stark reminder of the dangers of recidivism and the need for effective supervision and rehabilitation programs for individuals on federal supervision.
