New York – Cameron McEwen, 23, of Middletown, New York, has been sentenced to a staggering 210 months in prison for the receipt and distribution of child pornography. U.S. District Judge Philip M. Halpern handed down the sentence after McEwen was found guilty of obtaining sexually explicit photographs of a 16-year-old minor through social media.
McEwen, who had previously been convicted of second-degree rape in Orange County Court for engaging in sexual intercourse with a minor under fifteen years old, has now faced the consequences of his online predatory behavior. ‘Child pornography is a scourge on our society,’ stated U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton, emphasizing the severity of McEwen’s crimes.
According to court documents, McEwen used multiple Snapchat accounts to extort and coerce the 16-year-old victim into providing explicit material. He also threatened her friend to comply with his demands. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by online predators, said FBI Assistant Director Christopher G. Raia.
McEwen was sentenced not only to prison but also to a lifetime term of supervised release upon his release from custody. The sentence underscores the commitment of law enforcement agencies like the FBI and local police departments to protect children from sexual predators, regardless of their location.
The investigation and prosecution were a collaborative effort involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Alaska and New York divisions, the New York State Police Troop F, the Middletown Police Department, and the Ketchikan Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn Wheelock is credited with handling the prosecution for the Office’s White Plains Division.
Anyone with information about child sexual exploitation is encouraged to call 1-800-Call-FBI. McEwen’s sentence sends a chilling message: there is no safe haven for predators in the digital age.
