SCRANTON – The grim halls of the United States Penitentiary at Canaan were rocked by news that Michael Caraballo, 37, a former resident of Vermont, has pleaded guilty to assaulting another inmate with a dangerous weapon. This admission came on September 4, 2020, in front of U.S. District Court Judge Robert D. Mariani.
Caraballo’s transgression, which he admitted to, involved the use of a sharpened piece of metal, colloquially known as a ‘shank,’ a contraband item within federal prison walls. The incident that led to Caraballo’s plea dates back to February 2017, shrouding the correctional facility in an eerie silence.
United States Attorney David J. Freed confirmed that Caraballo’s actions were deliberate and violent. Judge Mariani has now ordered a presentence report, setting the stage for Caraballo’s sentencing at a yet-to-be-announced date.
The investigation into this heinous act was jointly handled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Bureau of Prisons Special Investigative Service. Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara is handling the prosecution of the case, ensuring that justice is served with a thorough legal process.
Under federal law, Caraballo faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, followed by supervised release and a fine. The Federal Sentencing Guidelines dictate that the Judge must consider various factors before imposing a sentence, including the nature of the offense, Caraballo’s criminal history, and the need for punishment and protection of the public.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers within correctional facilities, where even the most basic safety measures can be compromised. The outcome will leave an indelible mark on Caraballo’s future and the memory of the victim he attacked with such a brutal weapon.
