A former office manager in Lawrence, Kansas, has been brought to justice after embezzling over $485,000 from her employer, Garber Enterprises. Candy A. Gunderson, 45, was sentenced to 24 months in federal prison for her crimes, which spanned nearly a decade.
The investigation revealed that Gunderson used various means to steal money from the company, including depositing checks made payable to Garber Enterprises into her personal account, issuing forged Garber Enterprises checks, and using company funds to pay bills for work performed on rental properties she owned.
Gunderson also used the company VISA card for personal expenses and deposited cash belonging to the company into her personal accounts. She even went so far as to forge checks on Garber’s account to pay for her personal phone bill.
The embezzlement scheme took place from 2007 to 2015, with Gunderson serving as office manager for Garber Enterprises in Lawrence. Her crimes were uncovered through a collaborative effort between the Lawrence Police Department, the FBI, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Rich Hathaway.
Gunderson pleaded guilty to one count of interstate transportation of stolen funds, a charge that carries significant penalties. As a result of her plea, she was ordered to pay over $485,000 in restitution to Garber Enterprises.
