CARBONDALE, IL – Brandon K. Craig, 21, of Carbondale, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced for his role in a multi-county methamphetamine conspiracy. The sentence, handed down February 19, 2015, reflects the gravity of the operation that plagued Jackson, Williamson, Union, and Franklin Counties between 2010 and January 2014.
Craig pled guilty to a one-count indictment charging conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine. U.S. Attorney Stephen R. Wigginton announced that Craig will serve 57 months in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release. A $300 fine was also levied. The operation wasn’t a one-man show; investigators uncovered a network of individuals involved in the illicit production of the drug.
Evidence presented at the plea and sentencing hearings painted a clear picture of Craig’s involvement. He wasn’t just a bystander. He was a methamphetamine cook, actively engaged in the process, and responsible for sourcing the key ingredient: pseudoephedrine. The court determined Craig was responsible for the illegal possession of a substantial 247 grams of the substance – enough to cook up a considerable quantity of the highly addictive drug.
This sentencing isn’t an isolated incident. Authorities revealed that four co-defendants have already been sentenced for their roles in the same conspiracy. Two more have pled guilty and are awaiting their day in court. A further six individuals have entered pleas of not guilty and are preparing for a jury trial, suggesting a deep-rooted and complex criminal enterprise.
The investigation, which continues to unfold, is a collaborative effort between the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Murphysboro Police Department, Carbondale Police Department, Illinois State Police/Southern Illinois Drug Task Force, and the Drug Enforcement Administration. The combined resources of these agencies were crucial in dismantling this operation and bringing those responsible to justice.
