A 15-year federal prison sentence has been handed down to Carl Eugene Gonderman, a 37-year-old Yakima man, for violating the Armed Career Criminal Act.
The sentence was handed down by United States District Court Judge Lonny R. Suko on June 13, 2013, after Gonderman pleaded guilty to being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
Gonderman’s lengthy criminal history was highlighted during sentencing, with the court noting that he has roughly a dozen prior felony convictions.
The charges against Gonderman stem from an incident on April 14, 2012, when Yakima police officers attempted to stop a pickup truck reported as stolen. Gonderman, the driver, led officers on a high-speed chase, reaching speeds of up to 60 m.p.h. and going airborne at one point. A loaded Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver was later found on the driver’s floorboard of the pickup.
The case was investigated by the Yakima City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Prosecuting firearms-related crimes continues to be a priority for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Washington, with Michael C. Ormsby stating that the Office is committed to prosecuting aggressively firearms-related cases in the Eastern District of Washington.
The court also ordered that Gonderman’s sentence run concurrent to his related state convictions arising from the incident and that he receive credit for time spent in state custody.
