In a shocking turn of events, a federal grand jury in Del Rio, Texas has indicted Carl Wayne Wiley, a 48-year-old man from Midland, for attempted murder of a federal agent. According to the indictment, Wiley allegedly attempted to kill one or more United States Border Patrol Agents who were engaged in the performance of their official duties on June 30, 2014.
The indictment, announced by United States Attorney Robert Pitman, Rodolfo Karisch, Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent, U.S. Border Patrol, and Christopher Combs, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Special Agent in Charge of the San Antonio Division, alleges that Wiley used a .45 caliber Ruger revolver to forcibly assault and interfere with one or more United States Border Patrol Agents.
Wiley is also charged with two counts of carrying and discharging a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years imprisonment each for the attempted murder charge and the assault charge. He also faces up to 10 years for the use of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence.
The defendant remains in state custody pending an initial appearance before a United States Magistrate Judge in Del Rio. Assistant United States Attorneys Chris Blanton and Ralph Paradiso are prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.
An indictment is merely a charge and should not be considered as evidence of guilt. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
The indictment highlights the serious nature of the charges against Wiley, and the potential consequences if he is convicted. The case is a reminder of the importance of the work done by Border Patrol agents and law enforcement officials in keeping our communities safe.
