A drunk driver has been sentenced to three years in prison for his role in a fatal car crash on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Maryland. Carlos Arnulfo Chacon Chacon, 42, of Laurel, Maryland, was sentenced on February 1, 2014, by U.S. District Judge Paul W. Grimm.
According to court documents, Chacon Chacon was driving a Toyota Celica northbound on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway when he crashed into a Mitsubishi traveling in the right lane. The Mitsubishi went over a stone wall, struck a tree, and caused its roof to collapse down into the passenger compartment.
The impact of the crash was so severe that the driver of the Mitsubishi, Yolanda Michelle Holt, 36, of Columbia, Maryland, sustained extreme head trauma and experienced cardiac arrest. Holt remained hospitalized in a coma for nearly eight months and died on September 22, 2014.
Chacon Chacon was able to walk away from the crash and spoke with police and emergency medical technicians. He twice declined medical treatment and admitted to drinking six beers shortly before driving. His blood-alcohol level was 0.17 percent, and a case of beer was found in the back seat of his car.
Chacon Chacon was also charged with driving an uninsured vehicle and reckless driving. He was sentenced to three years in prison followed by one year of supervised release.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Hollis Raphael Weisman and Special Assistant United States Attorney Gustav William Eyler, of the U.S. Justice Department.
United States Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein commended the U.S. Park Police for its work in the investigation.
