A 49-year-old veterinary technician has been sentenced to 20 months in prison and three years of supervised release for conspiring to fight dogs and promote dogfighting using interstate publications.
Court documents reveal that Carlos Warren, of Rapidan, Virginia, started fighting dogs as a teenager and continued the practice while living in both California and Virginia.
Warren published and distributed a magazine called ‘the Connector,’ which contained interviews of known dogfighters, the results of various fights, breeding and pedigree information, advertisements for fighting dogs, and a page that advertised the illegal sale of injectable steroids and other substances for dogs.
After moving to Virginia, Warren set up a dogfighting yard, hosted dogfights on his property, and attended other dogfights.
As a veterinary technician, Warren was able to steal or obtain medications and other supplies, which he used to treat dogs during fights until they lost or refused to fight.
When the dogs were no longer fight-worthy, Warren executed them through brutal means, including electrocution.
Assistant Attorney General Todd Kim stated, ‘This prosecution highlights the department’s continued commitment to holding accountable those who participate in and promote the blood sport of dogfighting.’
U.S. Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh added, ‘Dog fighting is savage and inhumane, and it will not be tolerated.’
