HAMMOND, IN – Brendan Theodore Coetzee, 29, of Johannesburg, South Africa, will spend the next decade behind bars after being sentenced to 120 months imprisonment for a sickening crime committed in 2015. United States Attorney David A. Capp announced the sentence handed down by District Court Judge Rudy Lozano today, a small measure of justice for a vulnerable victim.
The case details a predatory act that began under the guise of innocent carnival fun. In May 2015, Coetzee, then a carnival worker, made contact with a female under the age of 14 at a Wisconsin carnival over Memorial Day weekend. This wasn’t a fleeting encounter; Coetzee actively cultivated a relationship with the minor through social media, laying the groundwork for a far more sinister plan.
Just weeks later, on June 22, 2015, Coetzee, having relocated to Northwest Indiana, lured the victim across state lines. He arranged a meeting at a motel in Lansing, Illinois, and there, he engaged in sexual intercourse with the minor. The interstate nature of the crime brought the full weight of federal law down on Coetzee, classifying his actions as using interstate communications to illicit sexual conduct from a minor.
The investigation, spearheaded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, quickly unraveled Coetzee’s calculated scheme. Local law enforcement, including the Lansing, Illinois, and Munster, Indiana Police Departments, provided crucial assistance in building the case against him. The evidence presented painted a clear picture of a predator exploiting a child’s vulnerability for his own twisted gratification.
Following his 120-month prison sentence, Coetzee will also be subject to five years of supervised release, a period intended to monitor his behavior and prevent further offenses. However, for the victim, the scars of this encounter will likely last a lifetime. This case serves as a grim reminder of the dangers lurking in seemingly innocent environments and the importance of vigilance in protecting children.
Assistant United States Attorney Toi D. Houston prosecuted the case, ensuring Coetzee was held accountable for his heinous actions. The Grimy Times will continue to follow federal prosecutions and expose the darkness that festers beneath the surface of everyday life. # # #
