Carter Smith, a 32-year-old resident of Baltimore, Maryland, stood trial in the United States District Court for the District of Maryland in 2018. His case, known as United States v. Carter, had been pending since December 19, 2017, when the indictment was filed.
Smith was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit robbery, one count of robbery, and one count of using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. The charges stemmed from a string of armed robberies that took place in the Baltimore area in the summer of 2017.
Prosecutors alleged that Smith was a key player in the conspiracy, recruiting accomplices and providing firearms for the robberies. The evidence presented during the trial included testimony from witnesses who claimed to have seen Smith at the scenes of the crimes, as well as forensic evidence linking him to the stolen goods.
In a verdict delivered on June 15, 2018, the jury found Carter Smith guilty on all counts. He was subsequently sentenced to 15 years in prison on August 10, 2018, by the Honorable Catherine C. Blake, Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.
The case highlighted the ongoing struggle to combat violent crime in Baltimore, and the importance of cooperation between law enforcement agencies in bringing perpetrators to justice.
