A violent confrontation in Fort Thompson, South Dakota, has led to the indictment of Casey World Turner, a 30-year-old man accused of assaulting a federal officer.
According to the charges, Casey World Turner was indicted by a federal grand jury for Assaulting, Resisting, and Impeding a Federal Officer. The indictment, announced by United States Attorney Ron Parsons, stems from an incident on January 19, 2018.
On that day, Casey World Turner allegedly forcibly assaulted, resisted, opposed, impeded, intimidated, and interfered with an officer from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, while the officer was engaged in the performance of his official duties. The indictment alleges that Casey World Turner used his shod feet on the officer, resulting in physical contact.
Casey World Turner appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on February 22, 2018, and pled not guilty to the indictment. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of up to 28 years in custody and/or a $500,000 fine, 6 years of supervised release, and up to $200 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
The investigation into the incident was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Crow Creek Agency, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuting the case. Casey World Turner was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial, which has not been scheduled.
The charges against Casey World Turner are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty. As the case moves forward, the prosecution will need to prove the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt in order to secure a conviction.
In the meantime, Casey World Turner will remain in custody, awaiting his day in court. The incident highlights the risks faced by federal officers who put their lives on the line to enforce the law and protect the public. The outcome of the case will be closely watched, as it has significant implications for the defendant and the community at large.
