Cesar Valdez-Sanudo Sentenced to 15 Years in Drug Empire Case

Deadly drugs, buried cash, and a web of violence — Cesar Valdez-Sanudo, 36, of Arlington, Washington, was sentenced today to 15 years in federal prison for running a sprawling drug trafficking operation that flooded the Pacific Northwest with fentanyl, heroin, and methamphetamine. U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour handed down the sentence in Seattle, calling the scale of the ring ‘stunning’ and citing the devastation caused by fentanyl in local communities.

Valdez-Sanudo pleaded guilty in June 2022 to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and carrying a firearm in connection with a drug trafficking crime. Authorities say he led a violent crew responsible for distributing hundreds of pounds of narcotics, including 143 pounds of meth, 15 pounds of heroin, and 35,000 suspected fentanyl pills seized during a multi-agency investigation. At his Arlington property, law enforcement unearthed more than 27 kilos of meth, nearly 6 kilos of heroin, and nearly 2 kilos of fentanyl pills — much of it buried underground.

The ring was taken down following a wiretap investigation that began in 2020. A December 2020 indictment followed, after agents intercepted a 49-pound shipment of meth from California, hidden in boxes destined for Washington. During raids, authorities seized 24 firearms, including a homemade silencer found in Valdez-Sanudo’s vehicle when he was arrested at the Snoqualmie Casino. He had planned to confront a crew member who owed a drug debt, messages revealed.

On the Arlington property alone, investigators recovered 10 firearms and over $300,000 in cash — part of approximately $778,000 seized overall, along with checks and bank assets tied to the operation. Valdez-Sanudo schemed to launder more than $1 million through casinos, bought vehicles and real estate with drug profits, and structured deposits under $10,000 to dodge federal reporting rules.

U.S. Attorney Nick Brown stated, ‘Mr. Valdez-Sanudo led a violent ring of drug traffickers and buried kilos of meth, heroin, and fentanyl on his Arlington property, along with more than $300,000 cash — proceeds from the harm he spread across the community.’ Brown added the 15-year sentence, while lengthy, is justified given the ongoing toll of the opioid crisis.

The case was part of a larger Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, targeting high-level traffickers through a multi-agency, intelligence-led approach. The investigation involved the DEA Tacoma Residence Office, Tahoma Narcotics Enforcement Team (TNET), Kent Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, SeaTac and Tacoma Police Departments, Snohomish Regional Drug Task Force, Skagit County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, ATF, and IRS. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Amy Jaquette and C. Andrew Colasurdo prosecuted the case.
