In a major blow to organized crime, a Lee County man has been sentenced to 130 months in prison for his involvement in a massive methamphetamine trafficking ring. Chad Curry, 51, of Leesburg, Georgia, was found guilty of Possession with Intent to Distribute Methamphetamine (70 months) and Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime (60 months).
The sentencing, which took place on May 16, 2018, marks a significant victory for law enforcement in the region. Curry’s crimes were uncovered during a search warrant at his residence in Leesburg on July 1, 2016. At the time of his arrest, Curry had in his possession approximately one ounce of crystal methamphetamine, two bags of marijuana, a .25 caliber handgun, and items consistent with the manufacture of methamphetamine.
According to the investigation, Curry was working with sources in Atlanta and Phoenix City, Alabama, to acquire methamphetamine for redistribution. He also admitted to manufacturing some quantities of methamphetamine himself.
The possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime earned Curry an additional 60 months in prison. As United States Attorney Charles E. Peeler noted, ‘Gun crime means extra time in the federal system.’
The case was brought under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made addressing rising violent crime a top priority, and this case is a testament to the success of the program.
The investigation was conducted by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and the Drug Enforcement Administration, with Assistant United States Attorney Leah E. McEwen prosecuting the case.
