ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – A Dulce man is facing federal charges for assault by strangulation after the victim was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Chalmers Dedios, 32, was arrested on unrelated charges after officers responded to a fight on Veneno Street in Dulce on February 19, 2024. The victim, who is also an enrolled member of the Jicarilla Apache Nation Indian Tribe, was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, including an active brain bleed.
During a subsequent interview, Dedios admitted to strangling the victim on multiple occasions, including incidents on February 10 and 14.
According to court documents, the victim showed signs of fear and was wearing heavy clothing despite warm weather when officers arrived at the scene. Dedios was subsequently arrested and charged with assault by strangulation.
If convicted of the current charges, Dedios faces up to 10 years in prison. The Jicarilla Apache Police Department investigated this case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jesse Pecoraro is prosecuting the case.
U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez announced the charges, stating that the alleged actions of Dedios are unacceptable and will be vigorously prosecuted.
Dedios is currently in custody pending trial, which has not been set. The case is a reminder of the importance of taking domestic violence seriously and seeking help for those affected by it.
