RAPID CITY – A Kyle man has been sentenced to federal prison for assaulting a woman in two separate incidents, resulting in serious bodily injury.
Channing Little Whiteman, 39, was sentenced to eight years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The sentencing took place on October 31, 2025, after U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler handed down the sentence.
Whiteman was convicted of two counts of Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, and he pleaded guilty to the charges on July 16, 2025.
The first incident occurred on May 13, 2024, when Whiteman and his girlfriend were drinking at their residence. An argument ensued, and Whiteman accused his girlfriend of cheating on him. Law enforcement was dispatched to their residence, and Whiteman assaulted the victim with a bat and a cigarette, resulting in a fractured leg and a cigarette burn to the victim’s thigh.
The second incident occurred on November 5, 2024, when Whiteman and his girlfriend were drinking again. Another argument ensued, and Whiteman accused his girlfriend of cheating on him once more. Whiteman grabbed a metal chair and struck the victim in the face with the chair, causing her orbital bone and maxillary sinus to fracture. The victim suffered a large laceration under her eye and was unable to see until the swelling decreased, as her eye was nearly swollen shut. At the time of the incident, the victim was seven months pregnant.
This matter was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office because the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandates that certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian country be prosecuted in federal court as opposed to State court.
The case was investigated by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen prosecuted the case.
Whiteman was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
