On November 19, 1903, Baxter Springs, Kansas, was thrown into chaos when Charles L. 8Hith, the editor of The Baxter Springs News, was quarantined due to exposure to smallpox. The usually stoic community was turned upside down as Charles, a young boy, was confined to his home, unable to leave or receive visitors. His parents, desperate to keep him and others safe, took drastic measures to prevent the spread of the disease.
