CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A chilling chapter in the city’s crime saga unfolds as Decarlos Dejuan Brown, Jr., 34, faces federal murder charges for the heinous attack that claimed the life of Iryna Zarutska on Charlotte’s light rail system.
Russ Ferguson, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, announced the charges today in U.S. District Court. Brown is charged with one count of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system, a crime that carries life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted.
Attorney General Pamela Bondi echoed the sentiment of outrage, labeling the murder a direct result of failed soft-on-crime policies and vowed to seek the maximum penalty for Brown, a repeat violent offender. ‘He will never again see the light of day as a free man,’ she declared.
FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the gravity of the attack, noting that the FBI swiftly responded to ensure justice is served. ‘The FBI jumped to assist in this investigation immediately to ensure justice is served and the perpetrator is never released from jail to kill again,’ Patel said.
U.S. Attorney Ferguson added, ‘This brutal attack on an innocent woman is an attack on the American way of life. We will bring justice to Iryna and her family, and federal charges are necessary to protect the public and ensure confidence in our transportation systems.’
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) responded to the August 22, 2025, assault that led to Zarutska’s tragic death. Brown is alleged to have stabbed Zarutska three times from behind after entering the same light rail car as her. If convicted, he faces life in prison or the death penalty.
