BOSTON – Lasall Johnson, 55, of Chelsea, Massachusetts, will spend the next decade behind bars after being sentenced yesterday for the horrific crime of possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM). U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin handed down the 10-year prison sentence, followed by five years of supervised release, after Johnson pleaded guilty in March 2024 to one count of possession of child pornography.
The case, spearheaded by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and federal prosecutors, revealed a disturbing pattern of behavior. Investigators discovered Johnson wasn’t just passively collecting the images; he was actively sharing them on a file-sharing network, knowingly contributing to the cycle of abuse. As Acting United States Attorney Joshua S. Levy bluntly stated, Johnson’s actions “perpetuated the exploitation and abuse of the most vulnerable members of our society.”
The investigation began in June 2021, tracing an IP address distributing large quantities of CSAM files back to Johnson. Over the following months, the IP address offered to share suspected CSAM torrent files on more than 85 occasions. A subsequent search of Johnson’s rented bedroom uncovered six electronic devices – three cellphones, two thumb drives, and an electronic tablet. Forensic analysis confirmed the presence of approximately 341 image and video files depicting the sexual abuse of children, some as young as four years old, across three of the devices.
This isn’t Johnson’s first brush with the law. Records show he was previously convicted in Norfolk County Superior Court in 1989 of two counts of assault to rape, receiving a 20-year state prison sentence. That conviction designated him as a Level-2 registered sex offender – a label that clearly failed to deter his predatory behavior. HSI Special Agent in Charge Michael J. Krol emphasized the gravity of the situation: “This sentence ensures that our communities are safer with him in federal prison.”
“Possessing child pornography is far from a victimless crime,” stated Levy. “Each image and video represents a real child who has been horrifically victimized, and consuming and distributing this material contributes to a cycle of abuse that leaves lasting scars on victims.” The sentence handed down is a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated and will be met with the full force of the law. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Suzanne Sullivan Jacobus of the Major Crimes Unit.
This prosecution is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in 2006 aimed at combating the epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project brings together federal, state, and local resources to identify, apprehend, and prosecute offenders, and to rescue victims. Anyone with information regarding child exploitation is encouraged to report it to the authorities. More information on Project Safe Childhood can be found at https://www.justice.gov/psc. The announcement of the sentencing was jointly made by Acting U.S. Attorney Levy, HSI SAC Krol, and Chelsea Police Chief Keith Houghton.
