Chemical Waste Dumping Hits $75K Fine in Salem

KIK (Virginia) LLC has been hit with a $75,000 fine after pleading guilty to polluting Salem’s sewer system. The company was caught discharging bleach into the sanitary lines without a permit, causing a massive spill.

The environmental disaster stemmed from spills and off-specification bleach washing down floor drains at the KIK facility in Salem. The untreated chemical flowed into the city’s sewage treatment plant, operated by Western Virginia Water Authority.

Under the Clean Water Act, KIK faces charges for discharging a pollutant that could cause property damage. Assistant Attorney General Eileen Sobek emphasized the importance of maintaining water quality and prosecuting those who harm public systems.

In addition to the fine, KIK must pay $25,000 in community service fees and serve one year of probation. The company is also required to develop an environmental management system and undergo an independent audit.
