Hammond, Indiana — A 42-year-old Chicago man is headed to federal prison for two decades after being caught red-handed with nearly half a kilo of pure methamphetamine and plotting to smuggle an additional 16 kilograms from Mexico. Jesus Lopez, now sentenced to 240 months behind bars, pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute, marking the end of a years-long investigation rooted in a routine interstate stop.
The arrest unfolded in November 2016, when a Hobart police officer pulled over Lopez and a co-defendant on I-94. Inside the vehicle, authorities found approximately 450 grams of 100% pure methamphetamine—enough to fuel a street-level distribution ring for months. Prosecutors say the duo was en route to deliver the stash to a buyer when they were intercepted, unraveling a broader smuggling scheme.
But the 450 grams was just the tip of the iceberg. Court documents reveal Lopez was actively trying to funnel an additional 16 kilograms of methamphetamine into the United States from Mexico the same month. Had the shipment succeeded, it would have flooded communities across northern Indiana with a deadly wave of synthetic narcotics, fueling addiction and violence.
“Mr. Lopez will serve 20 years in prison for his guilty plea to possessing with the intent to distribute methamphetamine,” said U.S. Attorney Thomas L. Kirsch II. “Smuggling drugs into our Country is an intolerable offense. We will continue to arrest and prosecute those caught in the Northern District of Indiana. I commend the interdiction efforts of the Hobart Police Department for the apprehension of Mr. Lopez.”
DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge Michael Gannon called the sentence “necessary and just.” He emphasized that traffickers like Lopez show total disregard for the lives of Hoosiers. “Mr. Lopez, and others, who show complete disregard for the well-being of Indiana residents by trying to bring methamphetamine into Indiana must be held accountable,” Gannon said. He praised the collaboration between federal, state, and local agencies that led to the conviction.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Hobart Police Department, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Chang. Lopez will serve 240 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release—a sentence meant to send a clear message: the pipeline of poison stops here.
