Bennie Lee Holtsoi, 27, of Chinle, Ariz., is headed to federal prison for 59 months after pleading guilty to assaulting his girlfriend so brutally she suffered multiple lacerations and abrasions across her scalp and body. The attack, which occurred in June 2016, left lasting scars — physical and emotional — and exposed the raw reality of domestic violence in remote tribal communities.
Holtsoi was sentenced on March 12, 2018, by U.S. District Judge Douglas L. Rayes in Phoenix. The judge handed down the sentence under federal jurisdiction because the crime occurred on Navajo Nation land, where the federal government prosecutes major violent offenses. Both Holtsoi and his victim are enrolled members of the Navajo Nation.
The assault was not a momentary flare-up — it was a sustained beating that crossed the line from abuse to life-threatening violence. Investigators with the Navajo Nation Criminal Investigations and the Federal Bureau of Investigation built the case over months, piecing together witness statements, medical reports, and forensic evidence that left no doubt about what happened that night.
Holtsoi’s guilty plea to assault resulting in serious bodily injury spared the victim from testifying at trial, but did nothing to soften the severity of the crime. Prosecutors argued for a sentence that reflected the brutality of the attack and the vulnerability of the victim in an isolated environment where help is often hours away.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kiyoko Patterson, who handled the prosecution out of the District of Arizona’s Phoenix office, emphasized that federal authorities will not look away from domestic violence, even in the most overlooked corners of the country. “This sentence sends a message,” Patterson said in a statement. “Abuse will be prosecuted, and perpetrators will pay.”
The case, recorded under CR-16-8266-PCT-DLR, is part of a broader federal push to combat violent crime on tribal lands. With release number 2018-026_Holtsoi, it stands as another grim chapter in the ongoing struggle to protect the vulnerable from those who should protect them most.
