A major blow was dealt to the fentanyl trafficking trade in New York City yesterday as Chris Hu, 35, was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for his role in the deadly operation.
Sun, a US citizen, was found guilty of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl, a synthetic opioid responsible for thousands of overdose deaths nationwide.
According to court documents, Sun’s operation distributed over 100 kilograms of fentanyl, with street values estimated in the tens of millions of dollars.
The case was a result of an extensive investigation by the US Department of Homeland Security, the New York City Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
In a statement, US Attorney Nicole Boeckmann said, ‘Today’s sentence sends a strong message to those involved in the fentanyl trade: we will pursue you relentlessly and hold you accountable for your crimes.’
Sun’s sentencing is a significant victory for law enforcement and a testament to the determination of those working to combat the fentanyl crisis.
The US Department of Justice has made addressing fentanyl trafficking a top priority, with efforts focused on dismantling large-scale operations and holding those responsible accountable.
As the opioid epidemic continues to ravage communities nationwide, cases like Sun’s serve as a reminder of the devastating consequences of fentanyl trafficking and the importance of continued vigilance in the fight against it.
