A Springfield, Massachusetts man, Christian Torres-Santiago, 21, has been sentenced to two years of probation for his role in a fentanyl and cocaine trafficking operation in Vermont.
According to officials, Torres-Santiago was present at a residence in Bennington, Vermont, when law enforcement executed a search warrant in October 2022.
During the search, officers found over 2,000 bags of fentanyl/heroin packaged for sale, approximately 25 grams of cocaine base, $4,400 in cash, and a Colt .45 caliber handgun, fully loaded with its serial number obliterated.
Torres-Santiago had previously pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and cocaine base.
At sentencing, Judge William K. Sessions III emphasized the gravely serious nature of Torres-Santiago’s conduct and the danger it posed to the Bennington community.
However, the judge also took into account Torres-Santiago’s young age, lack of prior criminal history, and his efforts to turn his life around since his arrest.
Torres-Santiago has been studying for a barbering license in Connecticut and has nearly completed the requirements.
The sentence of probation will require Torres-Santiago to continue on this path, or face a resentencing on the full scope of his conduct if he strays.
United States Attorney Nikolas P. Kerest commended the collaborative investigatory efforts of Homeland Security Investigations and the Bennington Police Department.
