Christopher Calderon-Melendez, 31, of Essex Junction, Vermont, is headed to federal prison after being sentenced to time served—approximately 7 months—for dealing heroin across Chittenden County. The conviction caps a months-long investigation that exposed a steady flow of the deadly drug into local communities.
On January 9, 2017, U.S. District Court Judge William K. Sessions III handed down the sentence, ordering Calderon-Melendez to serve an additional three years under federal supervised release. The decision follows Calderon-Melendez’s guilty plea to a federal indictment charging him with multiple counts of distributing heroin between October and December 2015.
According to court records, law enforcement executed four controlled buys from Calderon-Melendez at various locations during the three-month window. Each transaction tightened the noose around the dealer, whose actions fed into Vermont’s worsening opioid crisis. Though he faced up to 20 years behind bars, advisory U.S. Sentencing Guidelines called for 6 to 12 months, factoring in his minor criminal history and personal struggle with opioid abuse.
Judge Sessions emphasized the broader toll of heroin on Vermont communities when justifying the 7-month term. While acknowledging Calderon-Melendez’s own addiction, the court refused to minimize the harm inflicted by his choices. Distributing heroin, the judge noted, doesn’t happen in a vacuum—it fuels overdoses, tears families apart, and burdens public safety systems.
U.S. Attorney Eric Miller, who oversaw the prosecution, praised the collaborative takedown by the DEA, Burlington Police Department, Essex Police Department, and other agencies. The case is part of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Vermont Heroin Initiative—a coordinated crackdown targeting suppliers driving the epidemic. Miller reiterated that dealers will be hunted down and prosecuted to the fullest extent.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy C. Doherty, Jr. handled the prosecution. Calderon-Melendez was represented by defense attorney Richard Bothfeld. Federal authorities insist this case is not an outlier but a warning: heroin dealers operating in Vermont will face federal time.
