Robber Sentenced to 15 Years for Credit Union Heist
A Des Moines man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the robbery of a local credit union. Christopher Leon Weckman, 53, was sentenced on April 23, 2019, by United States District Court Senior Judge Robert W. Pratt.
The robbery occurred on September 25, 2017, at the Tradesmen Community Credit Union, located on Southeast 14th Street in Des Moines. Weckman entered the bank, concealed his face, and placed an object on the counter, claiming it was a bomb. He then demanded money from the bank tellers.
After fleeing the bank, Weckman was apprehended by the Des Moines Police Department. Evidence presented at trial established that Weckman was the perpetrator of the crime.
On August 3, 2018, Weckman was convicted by a jury. This conviction ultimately led to his 15-year prison sentence.
The case was investigated by the Des Moines Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation Safe Streets Task Force. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
