Christopher Sean Brown, Attempted Murder, South Carolina 2023

Christopher Sean Brown, a 23-year-old member of the Cowboys street gang, has pleaded guilty to attempted murder in aid of racketeering activity. Brown, also known as Rougish, was involved in a drive-by shooting on May 30, 2013, in Walterboro, South Carolina.

According to the indictment, Brown and his co-defendant, Matthew Rashaun Jones, a 23-year-old member of the Cowboys gang, participated in a drive-by shooting at a residence where suspected members of the Dooley Hill gang, a rival gang, were believed to reside.

The indictment also alleges that Jones shot at a person on May 12, 2011, whom he believed was an associate of a rival gang. This shooting led to a retaliatory shooting on May 14, 2011, during which an innocent bystander was shot and injured.

Brown and Jones were charged in a February 9, 2016, indictment with racketeering conspiracy and related offenses, including attempted murder in aid of racketeering and firearms offenses.

The cases are being investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, the Walterboro Police Department, the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, the Summerville Police Department, and the First Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

Brown’s guilty plea is a significant development in the case, which highlights the ongoing struggle with gang violence in South Carolina. The Cowboys gang has been involved in a range of violent crimes, including robberies, attempted murder, and narcotics trafficking.

Christopher Sean Brown, aka Rougish, is currently in custody. The exact sentence he will face is not yet clear.
